Life Goals

I'm going to run a 5K.

Okay, I haven't decided precisely when this is going to happen, but it will. Perhaps when I'm 30. Ideally it would be before that, though. I've been doing really well with my general workout routine and quite enjoy a good gym visit. Suffice it to say that I am significantly more fit now than I have been in a good long while.

So what's the problem, you ask? Welp...I can currently run about 50 yards. Those 50 yards are shortly followed by overwhelming nausea, dehydration, jelly legs, and debilitating shortness of breath. THAT, you see, is the problem.

If this were a 5K of ellipticalling, I would straight up rock that! (Why hasn't anyone invented that yet?) Unfortunately it's not. I need some pointers on how to begin a running regimen. I've looked some stuff up and talked to my running-savvy friends, but still don't feel like I have any sort of concrete idea of how to begin.

Time for a little less talk and a lot more action. Let's do this.

I'm planning on doing a lot in the next year, so hop on whenever you feel ready!! And you really don't have to run the whole thing, just doing it would be a good accomplishment!!

Go to Livestrong (lance armstrong page) it might have some pointers for how to start a running regime. When I start training for running I try to start small and work my way up. I would run whatever you can, then walk...do intervals. They are great for running and build up stamina! Congrats on the plan...maybe someday I'll be joining in on this running fabulousness!

Start small. Run those 50 yards every day (or other) and in no time they will feel easy, I swear! Then you start running a bit more and building on that. Don't feel intimated, ease into it and take baby steps. Dont try and bite off more than you can chew, you'll get discouraged easier and have a higher risk of hurting yourself. Runnersworld.com is probably your best place for beginners info and training plans for a 5k. I've done 2 marathons & qualified for Boston and I started out running ~1mi everyday to build up! You can do it!

Way to go - saying you're going to run a race is the first step. I said that this past spring, picked my race, and used the Couch to 5K interval training system. It was great, and this guy even made a podcast to coordinate with the program so that you don't have to keep looking at your watch for the intervals. Here's the link: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml You can find the podcast on iTunes. Some of the music gets pretty boring, but once you are a few weeks in, you'll be running for longer intervals and can use your own music.

I did the Race for the Cure as my first one, and it was really good (and noncompetitive) for a first 5K. Here's a website that lists upcoming races by city: http://www.runningintheusa.com/Default.aspx
